Although clover is categorised as a wildflower, sowing it is quite similar to sowing grass seed. So, join us as we share our advice for how to get the perfect clover paradise in your garden, and you will see how straightforward it is to sow Clover All Over!
Sowing with 100% Micro Clover Seed
- Dig the soil to a depth of 20-25 cm.
- Remove weeds by hand or with a weed killer.
- Add topsoil if there are dips in the area or if it’s uneven.
- Rake the area to create a level seedbed.
- Let the seedbed sit for 10-14 days to encourage weed growth, then remove any weeds by hand.
- Sow the seed at a rate of 10g per m² using a seed spreader or by hand.
- Gently rake the seed into the soil.
- Walk over the sown seed or use a roller to enhance seed-to-soil contact.
- Water the freshly sown seed thoroughly over the next 6 weeks.
Top Tip: Clover seed germinates and grows best when the seed sits 5-10 mm beneath the soil’s surface.
Overseeding an existing lawn with Clover All Over
- Mow your lawn as low as your lawnmower can go.
- Rake the area enough to loosen the soil and remove any dead grass, weeds, or moss at the same time.
- Let the seedbed sit for 10-14 days to encourage weed growth, then remove any weeds by hand.
- Sow the seed at a rate of 5g per m² using a seed spreader or by hand.
- Gently rake the seed into the soil.
- Walk over the sown seed or use a roller to enhance seed-to-soil contact.
- Water the freshly sown seed thoroughly over the next 6 weeks.
Once clover seeds have been sown, they will become fully established around the 6-8 week mark and from then, will be mainly self-sufficient.
Can I blend Clover All Over with other grass seed mixes?
Yes! Just like how you can blend grass seed mixes together (eg a popular combination is STEADFAST: Shade mixed with SUPERSTAR: Back Lawn), you can also blend our 100% Micro Clover Seed with any grass seed mix.
The one thing to note about mixing the clover seeds with grass seed is that 5% of the total mix must be made up of clover. Whilst this doesn't sound like a lot, clover seeds are tiny and hardy, thriving well once they get established. So, if you have a 10kg bag of grass seed, you should add 500g of clover seed.
When should I sow clover seeds
Similar to sowing grass, clover should only be sown when temperatures are consistently 8-10°C or above during the day and night. This typically occurs through the months of March - September. You can read more about best conditions for sowing on our blog: 'When to sow clover seeds UK'.
How tall does micro clover grow
Clover will grow naturally to around 4-6 inches tall. If you prefer a neater and lower-growing clover carpet look across your lawn, you can encourage clover to grow smaller by mowing more often.
Will micro clover grow in the shade
Clover grows well in shaded areas of your garden since it’s commonly found on the woodland floor beneath the forest canopy. However, like most plants, it will grow better if it receives sunlight throughout the day. So don’t be surprised to see it grow better in areas of your lawn basked in sunlight for a few hours each day.
